Little Cottonwood Canyon, Utah Proposal

If you’re proposing… do it on the side of a mountain… in Utah… with me to take your photos:)

With every proposal, I like to plan ahead and make sure we have all the details down.

It was late fall for this proposal and the lighting and angles up this canyon that time of the year are extremely different from the summer or spring. With every proposal, I try to scout out the location or do as much research as possible for each spot so I know it inside and out. So I had my client and I go up to the spot, so we had an idea for the lighting and location. There was a short 5-10 minute window that was perfect for the lighting. Not too harsh, not too soft

Lighting and location are one thing. But also the story you tell your girlfriend before is just as important if you want it to be a surprise. Sometimes it takes weeks or months to plan it all out, so it’s not suspicious. Making sure she has a friend take her to get her nails done the week before. Taking her on more and more dates prior to the proposal, so there’s no suspicion of a random hike or dinner thrown out there. Most importantly, keeping your cool the day of… most guys are very nervous.

Lastly, where is the photographer (me) during all this? I found that hiding looks way more suspicious than just being right in the open. I always try to hide my cameras, keep my back to the couple, be a good distance away from them, or many other ideas. Overall, I never want to take away from the moment. I make sure that whatever I do, the couple just feels like it’s just them and nobody else. It’s about the couple getting engaged and taking the best photos possible while letting them privately enjoy one of the happiest moments of their lives.

That’s just my short thoughts on proposals and my approach. If you’re considering getting engaged, then I’d love to be with you every step of the way and be your photographer. Proposal, Engagement, and Wedding photography.
